Blog Post #9: Day Twelve

 Day 12

What I want young women and girls to know is: You are powerful and your voice matters.

You're going to walk into many rooms in your life and career where you may be the only one

who looks like you or who has had the experiences you've had. But you remember that when

you are in those rooms, you are not alone. We are all in that room with you applauding you

on. Cheering your voice. And just so proud of you. So you use that voice and be strong.

Yesterday was day 12 of my Hawken Project and Inauguration Day! While I continued to

work on the list of Important Topics, Terms, and People to know for each course along with

finding the links to certain video clips or documentaries for each of the courses, I tuned into

CNN to have the Inauguration playing in the background. I was too young to remember

both of Barack Obama's inaugurations, so this was the very first inauguration that I have

tuned into and will most definitely remember as I become older. Yesterday's inauguration

day marked an historic day in history as the first Black and Asian-American woman was

elected into office as the vice president in America's 246 year history. Just pause and think

about that for a moment. In 246 years, there has been only one president of color and one

vice president of color. To just fathom that this country has been standing for nearly three

centuries with only two people of color and one woman in office just goes to show how long

of a ways that we have to go. But nevertheless, I still have hope that this country will

understand the importance of representing the true diversity of the American people and as

VP Harris stated, "I may be the first woman to hold this office. But I won't be the last." So, as

I continued to watch yesterday's inauguration and Amanda Gorman's beautiful poem "The

Hills We Climb", I reflected on this momentous day in history and the impact that VP

Kamala Harris has made on Black girls like myself. In addition to that, I also reflected on

how important it is to tell the story of VP Kamala Harris and those that have paved the way

for her and so many other Black politicians today!
